Cnames and "virtual name based hosting"

It is perfectly OK.
 
May be you were thinking of something else:

unixbox.domain.com. IN A 1.1.1.1
www-hosting.domain.com. IN CNAME unixbox.domain.com.
www.customer1.com. IN CNAME www-hosting.domain.com.
www.customer2.com. IN CNAME www-hosting.domain.com.
www.customer3.com. IN VNAME www-hosting.domain.com.

This would be very convenient but probably illegal (RFC 1034 "Domain
names in RRs which point at another name should always point at the
primary name and not the alias. ")
