I have had no problem with this in the version 9 binds, currently 9.2.2-P3,
that I have used. What is "not sorted out yet" about logfile roll-over?

Section from /var/named/named.conf:

        channel "queries_channel" {
                file "log/queries.log" versions 5 size 1m;
                severity info;
                print-time yes;
                print-category no;
                print-severity yes;
        category "queries" { "queries_channel"; };

# ls -l /var/named/log/queries*
-rw-r--r--   1 root     other     346305 Oct  2 09:31 /var/named/log/queries.log
-rw-r--r--   1 root     other    1048579 Sep 29 19:37 /var/named/log/queries.log.0
-rw-r--r--   1 root     other    1048654 Sep 25 02:04 /var/named/log/queries.log.1
-rw-r--r--   1 root     other    1048622 Sep 20 21:34 /var/named/log/queries.log.2
-rw-r--r--   1 root     other    1048658 Sep 16 10:41 /var/named/log/queries.log.3
-rw-r--r--   1 root     other    1048578 Sep 11 14:42 /var/named/log/queries.log.4
