I did not have an A record in domain.com.fwd. I put it in and now the "host ns.domain.com" command works and resolves to my public IP. Does FreeBSD use the nsswitch..conf file? I am just following FreeBSD convention with the two entries in /etc/hosts. I am no further ahead, mail still keeps coming from @ns.domain.com.
