zone <DOMAIN.NAME>/IN: refresh: failure trying master xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx#53: timed out

I am getting this message:

zone domain.com/IN: refresh: failure trying master xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx#53:
timed out

on my secondary server.  I am getting this only when my primary server
shuts down.  The reason it is shutting down is a whole other problem,
but I want to make sure that my secondary isn't having problems when
the primary bites the dust.  Any ideas?
