How does /etc/resolv.conf work??

Hi,

When a name can not be resolved by my first DNS (because it is not in the RR), 
will it also try to resolve in my second, third DNS?? Since all the three has 
the same configuration and they are defined in the /etc/resolv.conf.
If it is, that will be stupid, it will cost unnecessary CPU load.
Can somebody tell me who the resolv.conf works??
