As usual, Windows is non-standard. Microsoft decided to implement DNS on a
per-interface basis rather than a per-machine basis. A couple of years ago,
I bought a 4 port 10-base-T hub for under $30. It was very small and would
easily fit in a laptop bag. It's a kluge, but having that along would allow
your machine to detect a network and use the localhost DNS setting on that
network interface.
