How does BIND communicate with the root servers?

No information is passed from your nameservers to the root nameservers. Rather,
the root nameservers give out referrals pointing to other nameservers, e.g. the
gTLD nameservers. Those nameservers, in turn, give out referrals pointing to
SLD (second-level domain) nameservers and others, which may include your
nameservers, depending on where your domain is in the namespace hierarchy.

If you want to change the DNS for a particular website, and the website name
isn't *also* a nameserver name, then you shouldn't have to interact with the
registry at all. You should just be able to change that information in your
zonefile. The only leaf-node names that the registry cares about are nameserver
names.
