TXT records

I am having a problem in updating a TXT record using res_update query in
BIND 8.2.3, it gives me a FORMERR, I have set the class to IN, type t-
T_TXT and the RR owner that is the r_dname parameter to
host.blr.novell.com and the r_data parameter to the text string
"something", but it gives me a format error in the r_data part saying 

host.blr.novell.com.  1D IN TXT  ""\#(            ; RR format error
        73 6f 6d 65 74 68 69 6e 67 00 )         ; something.
;; Querying server (# 1) address = 164.99.148.240
;; got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: UPDATE, status: FORMERR, id: 21228

Could somebody tell me how to solve this. I have been stuck with it for
quite some time.
