can't list domain, query refused. same subnet & no restriction

No.  But it's prohibited to have a CNAME record there.  How many times have
people asked in this group about making the domain name be an alias and
we've told them that it's prohibited because of the "CNAME and other data"
rule.

Didn't you see the error message about this in the log on the master?
