i was wondering that myself when using the rndc command in an init
script. i think the time it takes depends how many pending updates
there are; this is what the rndc stop command is waiting for. i don't
think it waits to return an exit status though, does it? you could use
rndc halt if you're not worried about saving pending updates.
i think rndc halt is _basically_ equivelant to a SIGTERM.
