I guess you've got this typo in your named.conf file "shadowededhand",
which is why Mark doesn't like doctored output on the list.

Sorry Mark,

I'm only doctoring the names as I'm trying to understand the concept, not
the real world entities. Okay, just to explain further (with the real
world names), this is what I have:

I have registered shadowedhand.net as a domain, with my primary nameserver
being lara.digitalinscription.net (203.116.238.252) and my first
secondary being ns.advent.com.sg (203.116.238.1). A whois confirms that
this data is in the whois database. The nameserver on
lara.digitalinscription.net has the following zone file for
shadowedhand.net:

$TTL 86400
shadowedhand.net. IN SOA lara.digitalinscription.net.
ian.digitalinscription.net. (
           2001060551 ;serial
           86400 ;refresh
           7200 ;retry
           8640000 ;expire
           86400 ) ;minimum

shadowedhand.net. IN NS lara.digitalinscription.net.
                               IN NS ns.advent.com.sg.

www IN A 203.116.238.250

shadowedhand.net. IN MX lara.digitalinscription.net.

And when I reload the nameserver I get this...

Sep 5 16:32:35 lara named[157]: reloading nameserver
Sep 5 16:32:35 lara named[157]: db.shadowedhand.net:2: SOA for
"shadowedhand.net" not at zone top "shadowededhand.net"
Sep 5 16:32:35 lara named[157]: Zone "shadowededhand.net" (file
db.shadowedhand.net): no NS RRs found at zone top
Sep 5 16:32:35 lara named[157]: master zone "shadowededhand.net" (IN)
rejected due to errors (serial 2001090551)
Sep 5 16:32:35 lara named[157]: Ready to answer queries.

I appologise for the confusion. I was trying an abstract approach to
understanding, which seems to have backfired.

Ian
