home.com didn't resolve for 29+ hrs??

Barry's point is that if @home doesn't resolve, you test it by
using dig to simulate the resolution process.

i.e;

dig @a.root-servers.net home.com mx
 Look at referral results...
dig @a.gtld-servers.net home.com mx
 Look at referral results...

If you ask your own DNS, you don't rule out problems with your
own DNS.

This is precisely the kind of diagnostic that the tools like
"doc" do, except it is more thorough than most people would be
using dig.

By asking each DNS server doc also helps checkout possible
routing issues.
