bind 9 encourages consistant practice, sometimes w/o anything
other than "it ought to work this way". The core specs are
often vauge, which leads to commentary & clarifications.

% Well, it's not me. It's a to-be unamed company that we work with
% extensively. They have a set up that directly violates the RFC's and we
% have to make do with it. The replacing CNAME with A record solution
% doesn't work because of the sheer quantity of the entries involved. Most
% OS's will truncate the answers and cause it not to work.
%
% Unfortunately this client insists on load-balancing via DNS despite my
% arguments, best wishes, and typical practices.

Potentially a good thing, Diversity is desirable.

% So you're telling me there is no way around this?

What I think you are hearing is that BIND 9 won't
let you do what you have been doing for years and works.
You might get satisfaction from the current BIND 8
	code.
