You haven't thought about upgrading lately, have you? Take a look at
http://www.isc.org/products/BIND/bind-security.html.
8.1.2 is vulnerable to several root exploits and it's quite possible
that what you saw was a failed attempt to use one. Also, currently
BIND 8 is at 8.2.5 and BIND 9 is at 9.1.3 or 9.2.0rc10.
