xfer erase soa records?

Did you look at the SOA on the master and verify that it's valid?
Try doing a manual zone transfer using dig:
dig @master.ibm.com rchland.com axfr

where master is whatever the name of your master is. You should see the SOA
record twice in the output: the first record and the last record.  This is what
the RFC's require.  When you do it, do you get them and are they identical?
