Sorry to break it to you, but this was never necessary in BIND 8 either. A
BIND 8 slave would create a new slave copy if a previous one didn't exist. (Why
are we speaking of BIND 8 in the past tense, by the way? It isn't dead yet.). I
think you misdiagnosed a problem a long time ago and you've been laboring under
a misapprehension all of this time. Either that, or you're still smarting from
some old BIND 4 bug...
