Okay, so which is it: do you have your own domain or don't you?

Not necessarily. You don't have to host your own domain if you don't want to.
There are many companies willing to sell DNS hosting as a service. Some domain
registrars even bundle DNS hosting with domain registration.

If you already have a domain, and they are already hosting it, then this
should work.

If you don't already have your own domain, type "domain registration" in any
search engine and you'll get a ton of hits consisting of companies willing to
sell this to you as a service. Some of their websites even have helpful
information about the process.

If you want to register under a ccTLD (country-code top-level domain, e.g.
registering example.es under the .es ccTLD), then you probably only have a
choice of a single registrar.

If you do already have a domain, and you want to start serving the domain from
your Linux box, then you need to talk to your ISP about getting authorized to
make changes to your domain record, and then deal with the registrar to make
the nameserver changes. Note that most registrars require that you have at
least 2 nameservers. Even if your nameserver becomes the master nameserver,
then, you may still want to your ISP to run slave nameservers, if they are
willing. Note that if your nameserver is master and your ISP has 2 or more
slaves, you wouldn't even necessarily need to change your domain record with
the registrar -- you'd be running what is known as a "hidden" master.

Note that if you want to run DNS with BIND, you should probably get a copy of
the O'Reilly book _DNS_and_BIND_ to learn about how it all works.
