Compilers do the same thing as djbdns: they leave the previous version
of the compiled program in place, and they tell the user about the
syntax error in the new version.

This is exactly what the users want. It is neither stupid nor dangerous.
Users detest BIND-style outages.

Certainly. That's why, when a djbdns user types ``make'' to compile a
new data file, he receives error messages in the foreground. He doesn't
have to search through some system-specific log file.
