I'm Puzzled....

I have a couple of questions I am currently running BIND 8.2 something 
running on a Solaris 7 server and I ran into a weird problem.  I was trying 
to resolve a site named www.stox.com and at the time that I was trying to 
resolve www.stox.com the secondary dns server for this domain was 
down.  When I did an nslookup I received a server not found error but when 
I used dig I received an answer with the correct IP address.  So my 
questions are;

How does that work???????

And, Is there a why to see which server is providing an answer with 
nslookup or bind?
