Somewhat simple DNS setup...

For ordinary website names, you can use CNAMEs or A records, it really doesn't matter. It's just that
when you use a name on the righthand side of a DNS record, it should be the canonical name, not an
alias. Also, some mailers will treat aliases differently from canonical names (sometimes they'll
rewrite one into the other), so this is something to bear in mind when configuring mail.

As for cableone.net, I don't think any remote diagnosis is going to be possible, since
ns1.cableone.net appears to be denying recursion to external clients. Maybe this is an after-effect of
your previous NS-pointing-to-CNAME issue. Check again after the TTL on the bad NS record expires (a
day) and see if their server is still having a problem.
