So to be clear, the proper way to put this in a zone file is:
$TTL 86400 @ SOA hostname.sld.tld. hostmaster.sld.tld.

With the left paren on a line by itself?

The zone data files.

The $TTL control statement needs to be on its own line. The
open parenthesis also needs to be at the very end of the line
that begins the SOA record.
