sighup and 9.1.0 not reloading

i'm installing 9.1.0 (chrooted and not running as root) on a slave while the 
master still has 8.2.2-p5.  zones load fine when named is started, but if i 
`rm` the zone files and hup named nothing is transferred and i don't see 
anything in the logs (i was expecting something like 'nameserver 
reloading').  i saw that sending manual signals has been deprecated, but i'm 
having a hard time understanding rndc (mostly generating keys and conf file 
syntax) and would like to roll this out as soon as possible.  can i expect 
to use signals in this manner? btw,  `kill -INT` kills the nameserver as i 
expected it would.  thanks.
