This is perhaps less useful that what was asked for originally by Matt.
Let's say that it was a matter of symmetry. I did not see any answer
to the original question either.

For transfer of the external zone between the internal servers (those
will often be under the same management), as aked by Matt, one could
use tricks 'by mutual agreement'. Playing with port numbers, for example.
No modifications would then be needed to the DNS protocol.

I did look at all the places where one can specify a port number in
the configuration, but it seems that no combination will allow one to
do what was requested.
