9.2.0 host and nslookup do not append domain

I have set up a t bind 9.2.0 test servers.
the slave server is in a higher level domain and the master is in the
subdomain "in"
the master server resolves just fine when I use hostname.
The slave server will resolve the fully qualified name but will not resolve
the "hostname.subdomain", it gives a host ... not found: 3(NXDOMAIN) error.
The Solaris 8 "/usr/sbin/nslookup" will resolve with just the
"hostname.subdomain".
I loaded 8.2.3 on the test servers and the host and nslookup worked fine
there.
Can anyone give some suggestions.
