Section 3.6.2 of RFC1034. I quote:

	If a CNAME RR is present at a node, no other data should be
	present; this ensures that the data for a canonical name and
	its aliases cannot be different.

Since you're presumably using the metacharacter for the current domain
origin -- '@' -- to name your zone's SOA and NS records, it therefore
follows that this name cannot also be a CNAME. The name already has a
SOA record and some NS records. Therefore if it was possible to use
the name as a CNAME as well, this would violate RFC1034.
