I think you're describing a "forwarding" server, not a "slave" server.
A "slave" server would replicate zones from a master.

Is your nameserver configured as "forward only"? If not, then it will try
to query Internet nameservers (including root servers) directly whenever
the queries to the forwarders time out. That would explain the log
messages you are getting.
