More on CNAME problem

The problem with excessive CNAME requests went on for about 2 weeks, and
then stopped as quickly as it started. The requests were from 3 IP
addresses, but predominantly from the one below. I have been in contact
with the site, but they have no idea what was happening.
Then I noticed something peculiar about all the requests. There is no
request for an "A" record, just a request for a "CNAME" record. Is this
normal practice?
