2d scenario advantage: single point to make any changes to the IP
address.

2d scenario disadvantage: you can no longer use "mail1" in an MX
record.  Also, two database references required to return an IP
address.  This may turn into two queries, depending on what your real
situation is.

You may want to consider why you had two different names, in the first
place.  Will one do?
