ARGH! response to localhost, no response to remote hosts

OK, so remotely it is consistent ... but that still does not make sense
to me. I've updated the zone file, incl the serial number, and restarted
named. From the name server itself:

# nslookup
Default Server:  localhost
Address:  127.0.0.1

> www.newzletter.com
Server:  localhost
Address:  127.0.0.1

Name:    www.newzletter.com
Address:  216.13.90.55

> dev.newzletter.com
Server:  localhost
Address:  127.0.0.1

Name:    dev.newzletter.com
Address:  216.13.90.51

How can the nameserver give both answers to localhost but not to remote
hosts?
