hello-

i am new to DNS administration, and at my workplace i've been asked to
monitor DNS activity.

the primary and secondary dns run on solaris 2.5.1 with named and nscd
running. although the ultra 2's run production applications, the
servers do not appear to be over-worked. there are about 200 clients
requiring DNS service. dns resolution times are very quick, less than a
few tenths of a second.

what is the best approach in figuring out the number of DNS resolutions
per day? i've examined syslog messages and output from nscd -g, is this
the right approach ?

my intention is tally per day the # of times DNS service is used. there
are a number of applications coming online which will be requiring name
service, and i would like to know if the current DNS servers can
accomodate the new apps.

there does not seem to be much posted/reference info on nscd, pretty
much just the man page. the man page in 2.5.1 states that nscd
basically is experimental/unsupported.

thank you in advance to any insights/references you might be able to
give me.
