AFAIK the /var/run/named.pid is created as root.root before ownership
is switched to named.named. I am running RH 6.2 with 1 master,1 slave
and three caching nameservers with bind 8.2.2p5.

This is off course assuming that you are running the supplied
script in /etc/rc.d/init/named or using NDC restart.
