Gone haywire on reboot

The server had been working perfectly until after a reboot this 
afternoon.  Then the logs started filing with messages like:

Mar 15 19:33:22 glr named[693]: sysquery: nlookup error on ?

Sendmail is having a fit as well with stacks of messages like: 
..."Sender domain must resolve"

Named is, however,  acting authoritatively for its zones.

Any wisdom would be appreciated.
