Laggy DNS lookups

I am running a new dns server (bind 8).  The server is up and running, but
my problem is it is slow in responding to internet queries.  Local lookups
are quick, but the internet queries take around 6-8sec.  (I get approx
22ms pings from my local dns server to the new server).  I was wondering
if anyone has any idea how to speed the query time up. (This is a very low
use server).
