Bind Wierdness

I am running bind 8.2.2 on a Debian linux box. Generally, queries are fine,
but every now and then it can't seem to find a domain which it found before.
I did some debugging and found that it is prepending my domain to the query:
ie: "nslookup cwusa.com" is being submited as "nslookup mydomain.cwusa.com"
this is not consistant and only occurs if named is running for a while,
and clears up if I do an ndc restart. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
