dns lookup on dialup line

i have a problem using dns requests on a dial up line using linux.

the problem is that when the line is down there is a default route to a
fake network.
if a dns request occurs the first packet is send to this network,
triggering the dialing.
when the line is set up the now correct network is set up as the default
route.
but the initial dns request gets no result (the request goes to the fake
network).

my question is: is it possible to set up the resolver to re-try a failed
ns-lookup ?

or should i set up a caching name server ?

thanks a lot

thomas
