A user reported a really strange problem which is best
illustrated by the command sequence below. When I
refer to 8.2.2 I mean specifically 8.2.2-P5.

# host gphinc.com.
Host not found, try again.

# host -w gphinc.com.
No recovery, Host not found.

[I know this domain exists, other non 8.2.2 nameservers I query find it
fine]

# host -d gphinc.com.
;; res_nmkquery(QUERY, gphinc.com, IN, A)
;; res_send()
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 31375
;; flags: rd; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0
;; gphinc.com, type = A, class = IN
;; Querying server (# 1) address = 209.133.56.194
;; timeout
;; Querying server (# 1) address = 209.133.56.194
;; timeout
res_nsend failed
Host not found, try again.

[Hmmm... timeout. Also got some "connection refused". Would have
thought it was a
local DNS server problem except that gphinc.com is the only one I get
this error from
and only when querying my 8.2.2 server]

# host -l gphinc.com.
gphinc.com name server 216.33.221.25
gphinc.com name server 216.200.110.8
gphinc.com has address 199.34.53.190
smtp.gphinc.com has address 207.49.19.20
secure.gphinc.com has address 209.133.56.238
pop.gphinc.com has address 207.49.19.20
localhost.gphinc.com has address 127.0.0.1
www.gphinc.com has address 199.34.53.190
ftp.gphinc.com has address 207.49.19.20

When I use the -l option to "host", it works every time! When I dropped
my DNS server
back to 8.1.2, everything works as expected. gphinc.com is hosted by
someone so I don't
know if things aren't screwy on their end, but if they are, they are
consistently screwy and
doesn't confuse bind-8.1.2 to the point of returning host unknown.

Any ideas?!?
