% grep NXDOMAIN /usr/include/arpa/nameser.h 
#define NXDOMAIN        3               /* non existent domain */

A list of response codes is given in RFC1035, which is always a good
place to start when trying to decode numbers that appear in DNS
packets: reply codes, query types, etc.
