mx records & authority

oops,

I forgot to mention that  bounce.joe.com has in it's sendmail.cf a
mailertable:

Kmailertable dbm -o /etc/mail/tables/mailer

where /etc/mail/tables/mailer:

.bigcompany.com    smtp:[205.19.134.12]
bigcompany.com     smtp:[205.19.134.12]
.bigcompany.nl     smtp:[205.19.134.12]
bigcompany.nl      smtp:[205.19.134.12]

The problem isn't sendmail, if I do an 'dig mx bigcompany.com' it returns
with their mx records, but I want our mx record for bigcompany.com to
resolve for our localhosts.

Nothing in those DNS entries tells bounce.joe.com to forward to the
"bigcompany" mail server on the 205 network, so it must be in the mailer
configuration.  I can't think of any reason why changing from BIND 4 to
BIND 8 should affect that.
