In Windows 2000 you van eliminate a machine trying to register itself
dynamically in DNS via

    Start
         Settings
               Network and Dialup
                     Local Area
                           Properties
                                Adapter
                                     Protocols
                                          TCP/IP
                                               Advanced
                                                    DNS
The "Register this name" box should NOT be checked.
If you need to uncheck the box, then you may have to reboot for the
    change to take effect.
