Difference in iterative and recursive query

In simple terms:

recursive: do all of the work to resolve this query and give the
completed answer back to me

iterative: tell me what you know about this name. If you don't have the
actual answer, at least give me back a referral to other, more
knowledgeable servers and I'll follow up with them.
