BIND 8.2.3 T4B (RC2) core dumping on Linux 2.2.14 (RedHat mutant )

This may already be known, but here it is anyway.

named starts up just fine, no errors in the logfiles or on standard output.
but mysteriously just stops. I searched for and found a core file.  When
compiling, I followed exactly the same proceedure as I did for 8.2.1 and the
various 8.2.2's
