pid unknown

hello,

I've got a bind running on suse linux but encountered the following problem:
bind seems to be running, (nslookup works), but if I use "ndc status" then I
get a response "no processes available - named (pid 425?) not running",
stopping with "/sbin/init.d/named stop" does also not work. In the log files
i get errors like "starting - there may be a name server already running -
exiting" (it seems to me that the pid number is unknown - a reboot seems to
solve the problem - anyone knows how to solve this without rebooting ?)
