There have been several problems published about AIX: you might want to
check the archives.

Do you have the base "software developers' kit" or whatever installed,
including the assembler?  Is it in your $PATH?  On, e.g., Solaris, this
is a separate directory from the regular path [/usr/ccs/bin/].

You may have to use GNU make, instead of AIX make.
