Up to 1000 CNAMEs in a zone, will it work ???

Memory consuming - of course.  ;-)  Slow or not depends on your machine.
Many systems have much more than this.

If this concerns you greatly, you could always just add:

*			IN  CNAME	www

but you could probably see the problems with doing this, as well.  ;-)
