Question about 8.2.2 $TTL

The $TTL is not a resource record, that gets transferred.  Think it as a
"macro" that does text substitution in all subsequent resource records.
The ones without an explicit TTL get the one specified in the $TTL
directive.  THAT is what gets transferred to the "slave" servers.  And
it will work - as all DNS is supposed to do - with all previous BIND
servers.
