reverse lookups

Hi All;

I have a reverse map with some entries (PTR records) that do not have an 
A record in the direct map.
When I do a reverse lookup of one of those IPs using names servers other than 
mine, the servers do not try to go and get the answer from my server.
The question is, do you need and A record in the direct map in order for the
PTR record in the reverse map to work?
