compiling BIND 8.2.2p5 on AIX 4.3.1

Hi.  The OS is AIX 4.3.1.0, and I'm using this version of gcc:

Reading specs from /usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/powerpc-ibm-aix4.1.5.0/egcs-
2.91.60/specs gcc version egcs-2.91.60 19981201 (egcs-1.1.1 release)

During the compile, I do:

1) make clean
2) make depend
3) vi .settings (change cc to gcc)
4) make

This results in:

        ranlib ../lib/libbind.a
        sleep 1 && touch ../lib/libbind.ts
        ranlib ../lib/libbind_r.a
        sleep 1 && touch ../lib/libbindr.ts

/usr/local/src/bind-8.2.2/src/bin
/usr/local/src/bind-8.2.2/src/bin/addr
        gcc  -g -O2 -I../../port/aix4/include -I../../include  -c addr.c
        gcc -g -O2   -o addr addr.o  ../../lib/libbind.a -ll
collect2: Library libl not found
make: 1254-004 The error code from the last command is 1.

Has anybody seen this before and know what is wrong?
