nslookup question?

I am running bind 8 and have been for 3 months with no problems.  However,
now when at > (nslookup) only the domains that I have on my server will
resolve.  When I try to resolve any external domain, it is not found.  This
just happened and I have not made any changes on the server.  Any ideas what
I could try checking?  Could it be related to root.hints?  I used dig to
update this 1 month ago and all went well.
