ISC and Espanix to Jointly Deploy a Root Name Server
New DNS Root Server Will Dramatically Improve the Strength and Integrity of the Internet Infrastructure Worldwide
MADRID, Spain--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Espanix and ISC (ISC) announced that they have reached an agreement to jointly develop, install and setup a Root Name Server for Europe based in Madrid. The new root server will be a replica of the server that currently operates at ISC, the "F-root server" and will dramatically improve the strength and integrity of the Internet infrastructure worldwide. This agreement will strengthen the Domain Name System (DNS) by deploying additional resources to handle growing Internet traffic and to disperse malicious traffic directed at root servers.
Paul Vixie, ISC Chairman, said, "Until now the 'root server' owned and managed by ISC was located in the USA. Even before the recent attacks on the root server system, we realized that to fully serve the entire Internet community -- and to defend against further attacks -- we needed our F-root name service to have a global footprint, with mirrors in many countries. Espanix is a partner for this effort."
Juan Puente, Espanix Chairman and Partner of Intelideas, added, "It is a privilege to be able to offer to all Spanish companies and Internet users in general a dramatic improvement in the strength and integrity of the Internet infrastructure in Spain. With this milestone Spain becomes a worldwide player in the Internet arena."
There are thirteen (13) "root name servers" worldwide and without them Internet would not be able to work. Of these thirteen "root servers", nine are located in the USA in places like NASA, US Navy, etc., one in Asia (Japan) and two in Europe (London and Amsterdam).
Espanix, is a non-profit association composed of telecom enterprises in Spain and an important Neutral Internet Exchange in Spain. Intelideas is an independent ISP provider offering service both domestically and abroad. ISC was founded to develop and publish high quality reference implementations of core Internet protocols including DNS.
