Well I wouldn't suggest re-inventing Node.js. Just like Python support would surely have to invoke the external Python interpreter, implementing JS support by utilizing Node would be the most obvious route. They deal with maintaining V8 compatibility.

V8 API is unstable so it is hard to maintain a code written in v8.
At least I am sure the v8 API version I used last year is today enough
different than some part of the code need to be rewritten.

PS: and a programming language is not popular because it is good or its
design is superior. Unfortunately Java showed qualitity and popularity
can be very different...
